Curriculum

St. Anastasia follow the curriculum of the Diocese and locally developed materials.  The McGraw Hill Reading and Language Program is used in grades K -5.  The focus of this program is a balanced approach with a strong phonics strand.  A great emphasis is placed on providing a developmentally appropriate environment for our students.  Individual needs of the students are considered by providing additional services including enrichment, speech, learning difficulties classes, Title I reading and Rainbow (For children suffering a loss).  Our school counselor is also available to consult with families and to offer assistance in times of crisis.

We also incorporate the Gospel values of faith, hope, reconciliation, courage, service, justice, community and love into all of our teaching.

Classes are primarily self-contained in grades K- 4, semi-departmentalized in grades 5 - 6, and fully departmentalized in grades 7 and 8.  Religion, reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies are taught at all grade levels.  Art, music, band (beginning in grade 5), physical education and computer classes round out our students' learning experiences.  Students in grades 7 and 8 have the opportunity to enroll in computer literacy, bells, drama, television broadcasting, newspaper, and art classes.  Our well-equipped media center is enjoyed and utilized by students of all grade levels.

Saint Anastasia offers special courses, such as band, music, chorus, art, computer, literate, TV production, drama, physical education, and sports.  By offering these classes, students are offered an avenue to discover their God-given gifts.  These gifts lift students' self-esteem and provide a platform for public performance, thereby enhancing creativity and allowing mind-expanding activities to build the whole child.

Guidance, Counseling, and Special Learning Services

The school is fortunate to have on its staff a Guidance Counselor whose services are available to students and parents on a limited basis.  Teachers, administrator, parents or the students themselves, may make a guidance referral.  The counselor is also available for classroom guidance lessons that focus on values and morality.

The counselor's primary role is to be a good listener and to help individuals solve their own problems.

Parents who believe their child is experiencing academic or learning problems should first contact the classroom teacher(s). If satisfaction is not obtained at this level, contact should be made with Mrs. Merry Pat Dillman, Coordinator of Exceptional Student.

Rainbow's For All God's Children is another program offered to our students.  The goal of this program is provide grieving children who have suffered a loss, because of death of a family member or divorce, with an understanding of their new family unit, to help build a sense of self-esteem, and to direct the children to accept the changes in their family.  Please contact Sister Helen for further information.
