Enrichment

Enriching our Students

Our students are blessed to be enriched daily with experiences that go above and beyond our core curriculum. As part of our mission to nurture the mind, body and spirit, we strive to enhance our students’ learning experience with a variety of opportunities that include:

Enrichment Classes in Critical Thinking and Math

Enrichment classes begin in second grade through eighth grade. In second through fourth grade, students who qualify for the Enrichment Program participate in critical thinking, project-based learning by working on reports, projects, computer technology, art and science. In fifth and sixth grade, students participate in Enrichment Math while preparing for pre-algebra. Honors Math is offered in seventh and eighth grade. The seventh grade students study Pre-algebra, which is an eighth grade course. This course prepares the students for Algebra in eighth grade. The eighth grade students study ninth grade Algebra. In 2010, 96% of our eighth grade students were placed in Honors Geometry at John Carroll High School. The algebra curriculum is state approved for high school credit. This enables high school seniors to take Calculus their senior year, which in John Carroll and many other high schools in the state, is offered as an AP course. Successfully passing the Calculus AP exam will allow students to receive college credit.

Liturgies and Religious Events:

The cornerstone of the education for students at St. Anastasia Catholic School is their faith formation as Catholics. This formation takes place through daily prayer, religion classes, sacramental preparation, all-school masses and prayer services, feast day activities, school “prayer tree” and prayer book, priestly guidance and church celebrations.

Spanish:

The St. Anastasia Catholic School Spanish curriculum is a diverse program that teaches children about Spanish in a fun and creative manner. Beginning in Pre-K, the Spanish program encompasses speaking, comprehension and vocabulary developments as well as grammar and cultural involvement. Students learn by singing, playing and written reinforcement to review concepts with a large variety of supplemental materials including games, music, videos and more. In seventh and eighth grade, Enrichment Spanish is offered. Students who are eligible to participate in Enrichment Spanish has the opportunity to earn high school credit in Spanish. Students are selected for this program based on GPA in sixth grade and the Language Arts and Spanish teacher’s recommendation.

Media and Technology

Library

The St. Anastasia Catholic School state-of-the-art Media Center’s goal is to support and enrich the school curriculum and objectives through assistance to both the individual student and to the faculty. The library seeks to encourage and nourish a lifelong love of reading for all. The new Media Center opened in 2006 and contains a library collection of over 10,000 print and non-print resources to facilitate student learning and research. The teacher resource room provides professional materials of print, video and software to enhance weekly lessons and promote professional development. Weekly scheduled classes for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade provide the opportunity for structured story time, independent/choice reading and expanded reading skills through literature discussion. Students of all ages use a computerized catalog system to locate and checkout materials for independent use. Grades three through eight library activities include opportunities to integrate and apply technology and research skills in a variety of learning activities and projects that are both library-based and collaborative efforts between the classroom and the Media Center. Other motivational reading activities include The Library Book Club, The Florida Sunshine Titles/Battle of the Books Program, Read Across America and two Scholastic Book Fairs.
