Welcome Back

School is finally off to a great start, no thanks to Fay. Let us all pray that our community is spared from any additional tropical storms this season.

Thank you for bringing your children to school on time every day and for your patience with the rainy-day dismissals. In the event of lightening, our first responsibility is to the safety of the children and not to the speed of our dismissal. I would expect that as sports begin to meet regularly and everyone finds their preferred time for pick-up, we will return to our normal 20 minute dismissal by next week. Dismissal does not begin until the 3:00pm bell. The line should begin to move at 3:05pm. Our goal is to complete our dismissal by 3:20pm and send the remaining children to our Extended Care Program. You can assist us with speeding up our dismissal by making sure your family name with the grades that your children are in are clearly posted in the front window of your vehicle.

Students with siblings who attend John Carroll High School should be picked up by their siblings under the St. Anastasia Sports Pavilion. After speaking with the administration at John Carroll, students will not be released to go to John Carroll by themselves unless they have a parent who works at John Carroll.

Choir and Band Need Your Support!

We have made a few positive changes to our Fine Arts classes in 7 and 8 grade. We have added a Music Appreciation class that will be taught by Mr. Winchester. He has been an adjunct professor at Indian River State College, taught middle school students, plays piano and bass guitar proficiently, and has a great deal of knowledge to share with the students about music.  Mr. Scott, our new dance instructor, will be teaching our students how to dance and about how to appreciate and identify different types of dance music. This new wheel format in Fine Arts was created to provide our students with a basic foundation in Music, Drama, Art, and Dance. All Fine Arts in 7 and 8 grade this year will receive a numeric grade that will be included in their GPA. Students who choose not to participate in Band or Choir for the year will participate in one of the before-mentioned classes for one quarter during 7 and 8 grade.

This Fine Arts wheel had a secondary purpose. I hoped that our award-winning band program and highly successful choir program would rise to the top as the preferred option for the musically talented children in our school. We are spending extra time and effort on making our band and choir programs fun and a richly rewarding experience. Students in 7 and 8 grade who choose band or choir for the year will benefit from professional instruction, concerts, performances, field trips, etc… We depend on our band and choir to support our school events and our masses. I need your assistance in supporting these programs. We have many children choosing not to participate in band and choir this year.  Presently, we only have three 8 graders participating in choir. If we do not have 5-7 more students express interest in choir by Monday, we will not have a Senior Choir this year. I know that you value these programs like I do. I hope you will discuss participation in choir and band with your children and encourage them to express an interest in participating.

If you have suggestions, concerns, or questions, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.

Yours in Christ,

Mr. Hoeffner

From the Assistant Principal’s Corner

WELCOME BACK!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome everyone back to school! I am especially excited about the upcoming school year because of my new role.  As your Assistant Principal, I will work hard to ensure that your child receives a quality Catholic education.  I am truly honored and blessed to serve this community and Jesus Christ in my daily vocation.  Thank you for your support as I transition into this challenging and rewarding position!

I am sure you are aware of our new policies for this year.  Please take time to read your new handbook and to sign and return the acknowledgement form in the back of the handbook.  I appreciate your support of our new 3 Strikes Discipline policy (explained to our students by our teachers) and our uniform enforcement efforts.  I strongly believe that frequent and meaningful communication among students, teachers, and families will support a happy and effective learning environment for your children.

May God bless you and your families! I’ll see you in the hallways!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Richmond

Uniform Infractions

What happens if a student is out of uniform?

The student must present a note from home to his/her teacher excusing the infraction. This will only be permitted once per quarter.  If no note is presented, the student will be sent to the Assistant Principal’s office.  Parents will be called and will be required to bring the proper uniform to school in order for their child to be admitted to class.  Continued uniform infractions will result in a parent meeting with the Discipline Review Committee.

In order for this policy to be successful, we must be consistent!  Small infractions may seem minor at the time, but our policy will fail if we do not enforce it.

Thank you for your support!

HELP AVOID DELAYS AT AFTERNOON PICK UP

To help the afternoon pick up line move faster, please make sure that you have a sheet of paper indicating your child’s last name in your car’s front window.  We have an employee who radio’s the child’s name to the student waiting area.  This allows the student to be at the driveway area when your vehicle arrives there.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION, FINGERPRINT BACKGROUND CHECK,

AND PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN WORKSHOP

It is the policy of the Diocese of Palm Beach and St. Anastasia Catholic School to complete a background and fingerprint check on any parent who wishes to be a volunteer at the school or a chaperone on school field trips.  The parent must also attend a Protecting God’s Children workshop before they may volunteer.  Protecting God’s Children is a workshop on child sexual abuse.  The workshop is usually 3 hours in length.

Please call or send a note to the office if you would like to request a Volunteer Packet.  The packet will be sent home with your child.

Parents will not be approved to volunteer or chaperone until we have received the results of the background check and we have verification of attendance at a Protecting God’s Children workshop.

If you have any questions, please call the school office.

(Fridays 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.) Please contact the school if you are interested in volunteering.

Interested volunteers must have completed a Diocesan fingerprint check and attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop.

HOMEWORK REQUESTS

We will gladly takes requests for homework if a student has missed 2 or more days of school.  Requests should be called in to the office before 10:00 a.m. so the teacher has time to get the work together.  It can be picked up that day after 2:00 p.m. in the office.

For your convenience, assignments are also on the school’s website, www.stanna.org.  This is probably the best way to access the student’s assignments.

ART CLASSES

Art classes are again being offered to students in 4 thru 8 grade by Ms. McCadden.  The class will focus on advanced drawing skills & instruction in watercolor painting, oil painting, and other art media.  Class is each Monday from 3:00-4:30 p.m. and the cost is $20 per class.  All supplies are provided.  If your child is interested in building their artistic abilities, please fill out the form below and return it to the school office.

STUDENT AND PARENT DIRECTORY

We will soon begin working on the Student and parent Directory.  In next week’s newsletter we will include a form that parents are asked to complete if they would like to be included in this year’s directory.  You may provide us with all information that is requested, or select only the information that you want included in the directory.
